The UTS General Access PC facilities currently consist of 22 labs equipped with IBM-compatible PC computers operating with Windows 2000. The PCs in each lab are connected via a Novell network to a file server holding a range of software packages provided by ITD. Each lab a 5-minute Express Machine and an internal phone and are connected to a printer.
Colour Scanners are available in all labs.
All PC labs are connected to the UTS Wide-Area Network and so have access to all servers and services available on the Internet.
What is Microsoft Windows?
Microsoft Windows is a graphics-based operating system for user-friendly interaction with the computer, mainly through the use of the mouse. A login is required to use the PCs with Windows NT.
Login
To use any UTS General Access Computing Facilities you will need to use your lab access account. This account can be gained from activating your email/lab access account.
Enter your login and personal password a the Novell Login Screen and click OK to access the machine. Once you have successfully logged in you will see the following:

Why should I Logout?
When you have finished using a PC with Windows NT you will need to logout. Click on the Start button in the bottom left-hand corner and select Logout. If you do not logout and someone else uses your account for offensive or malicious reasons, you will be held accountable for their actions and access to your account and therefore UTS General Access Computer Facilities will be locked.
Starting Windows NT Applications
Applications can be opened from the Start menu in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. To open windows an application:
- Pull up the Start menu by clicking on the Start icon or press the windows key on the keyboard:
- Select Programs from the start menu
- Select the application you wish to use

The Task Bar and the Start Menu
The Task Bar is the grey bar located at the bottom of the screen. It contains the Start button and the system tray. It also displays a button for each open application with the applications name so you can easily see which applications are open. Switch between applications easily by clicking on the button in the Task Bar.
The Start menu will be displayed by clicking on the Start button. The Start menu offers such options as running programs, creating new documents, finding files and logging off/ shutting down the system. You can access the start menu by clicking on the start button with the mouse or by pressing the windows key on the keyboard.
