Computer Labs

Computing facilities are available to UTS Staff and Students for academic teaching, coursework, learning and research. Many of the labs are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. So no matter where you are studying at UTS, you will have access to up-to-date technology and software needed to effectively and efficiently undertake your studies. The General Access Computer Labs are based on 2 different computer platforms:

  • OS X
  • Windows 7

Lab access

Before you can access UTS General Access Facilities including Computer Laboratories, Computer Lounges and the Wireless network, you will need to activate your UTS Email and Access Account.

Faculty computer labs

Some UTS General Access Computing facilities have faculty specific software available on their machines for students to access and use according to your course. Lecturers will usually advise you if the software is located on these machines.

Some faculties operate their own computer facilities with specialised software. Faculty labs are available to students enrolled in courses run by the respective faculty.

My Monitor

My Monitor is an online payment system that allows UTS students to apply credit to student print and copy accounts for the purposes of paying for printing, photocopying, laundry operated machines and library fines.

Please familiarise yourself with the Terms and Conditions before using this facility.

Using the UTS My Monitor web site:

  • Open the UTS My Monitor web site
  • Sign in using your UTS username and password
  • Familiarise yourself with the Terms and Conditions
  • Select ‘Add Value’
  • Select the value you wish to add to your account then select ‘Pay’
  • Select your card type
  • Enter the required credit card details
  • Select 'Pay' to process the transaction

Resource Centre

The Resource Centre offers a fully serviced comprehensive do it yourself service to the UTS community.

The resource centre service range includes:

  • A4, A3 digital printing and copying
  • Comb Binding, Thermal binding, Thesis binding
  • Large format digital printing
  • Document Scanning and 35mm Scanning
  • Colour Scanning
  • CD and DVD duplication and packaging
  • Laminating
  • Digital Photo Printing
  • Cover stock selection
  • Facsimile Service

Please note - Resource Centre transacts sales via Print/Copy Account, EFTPOS and Credit Card only.

The Service Desk Knowledge Base contains useful information relating to making effective use of the Resource Centre, this includes Colour Scanning, burning information to CD/ DVD.

Rules and Policies about using UTS computers

You will need your UTS Student/ID Card with you at all times when using the Computing Facilities. Under UTS policy Security and ITD Staff may visit the labs to ensure that all users have their current Student/ID Card.

All users of UTS General Access Facilities are bound by a set of rules. These rules are designed to ensure maximum benefit from the facilities for all students and are located on the notice board in each lab and also available through the Service Desk Knowledge Base. Any person found in breach of any of the rules will be asked to leave. ITD Staff or UTS Security can exclude you from lab use for up to 7 days under these rules.

In addition to Lab rules The Acceptable Use of IT Facilities Policy and Copyright at UTS covers all UTS IT facilities.

Lab Bookings (For Academic staff only)

General Access Computing Facilities are available for booking by UTS Academic Staff for the purposes of teaching or conducting training courses. The staff member is responsible for managing student conduct during booked classes and is requested to not leave the room during the booked session. Booking time sheets are posted on, or next to, the door of each computer laboratory.

Note: UTS General Access Computing Facilities are not available for bookings by students, nor can individual computers be booked.

Location and hours and scanning (express)

Every UTS Lab has a 15-minute Express Machine, at least one colour scanner, access to a Laser Printer and an internal phone.

General Access Computer Lab Maintenance

All computers within UTS General Access Computing Facilities are regularly maintained.

General Access Computer Lab users will be notified of computers shutting down by messages appearing on the computer lab screens screen; 1 hour, 30 mins, 15 mins and 5 mins before the computer will automatically close down.

NOTE: The operating times in some labs are reduced during semester breaks. These times are notified prior to semester break.
