Virtual Lab

The Virtual Lab provides students access to lab applications on your own hardware, at UTS over the UTS wireless network or at home via your own Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Virtual Lab Software List

The following is a list of available applications through the Virtual Lab. These applications are split into areas of faculties and study sections.

Using Virtual Lab

You will need to install a Citrix client on your computer to access the software applications.

Once you have entered the Citrix Client page you will see a menu called 'clients'. Here you can chose Mac, Linux and Windows as per your needs. After clicking on the relevant download you will be able to source documentation and instructions on how to install and configure settings for your particular needs.

Logging in to Virtual Lab

Logging in to Virtual Lab for students

  1. Login Virtual Lab to access the Virtual Lab login page.
  2. Enter your UTS Email and Access Account username and password and then click on the Log In button.
  3. Once logged in successfully you will see the applications available to you organised in folders as listed in the software list.

Logging in to Virtual Lab for staff (Internal UTS Network)

  1. Login Virtual Lab to access the Virtual Lab login page.
  2. Enter your UTS Email and Access Account username and password and then click on the Log In button.
  3. Once logged in successfully you will see the applications available to you organised in folders as listed in the software list.

Logging in to Virtual Lab for staff (External UTS Network)

  1. Access the Virtual Lab login page via the UTS Remote Access Portal.
  2. Enter your UTS Email and Access Account username and password and then click on the Sign In button.
  3. Click on the Bookmark “Virtual Labs” you will be re-directed to the Citrix Virtual Lab login page
  4. Enter your UTS Email and Access Account username and password and then click on the Log In button.
  5. Once logged in successfully you will see the applications available to you organised in folders as listed in the software list.

Starting Virtual Lab Application

  1. Click on the Folders to Navigate to an application of your choice and click on the application icon to start the program.
  2. You may use the "Top" and "Up" icons to navigate back out of folders to access other applications.

Saving your work on Virtual Lab

You are provided with a 10Mb scratch space for saving your files while you are online so you can work quickly and efficiently on big files. Please ensure you copy your work from the scratch space to your local computer once you have completed working on your file.

Please Note: Files stored on the scratch space are not guaranteed to be there for more than 7 days. It is your responsibility to make a copy and backup of your work after each session.

  1. To save your files on the scratch space, select the 'My Documents' folder or Z: in your application "Save" dialog box.
  2. To transfer your files from your scratch space to your local computer, use the "Windows Explorer" program.
  3. You will notice that your local computer drives has been mapped to A$, C$, D$ etc... depending on how many drives your have. Your files will be saved in My Documents or Z: depending on where you choose to save it.
  4. You may either drag and drop your files from the scratch space or copy and paste your files from the scratch space to your local computer.

When saving or accessing files you may be prompted for "Client File Security" settings. Ensure that you select "Full Access" and "Never ask me again for this site" then click on the "OK" button so that you can always save your files from Virtual Lab to your local computer.

Printing your work on Virtual Lab

Direct printing from the Virtual Lab application to your printer is not supported. Due to the vast number of printers available in the market, it is impossible to support all the printers effectively.

A PDF printer has been installed which allows you to print to a PDF file and later transfer that to your local computer for viewing and printing through Adobe Acrobat Reader. You may download the Adobe Acrobat Reader for free at the Adobe website if you don't already have it installed.

To print a document

  1. Select Print from the File menu or through the print button of your application.
  2. Ensure that the "PDF995" printer icon is selected, then click on Print.
  3. A "Pdf995 Save As" dialog box will pop up for you to save your PDF file to your scratch space.

Once the PDF file has been saved, you may transfer your files from the scratch space to your local computer for later viewing and printing.
